Before you assign any Skill Evaluator tests to one or more students, you need to configure the settings.  This will usually only have to be done once when you first want to assign tests to students, but the settings can be amended later if you wish.

To open the Settings Menu, click on ‘Options’ and then ‘Skill Evaluator’, then select ‘Skill Evaluator Settings’.  Here you can choose to apply each setting by ticking the box alongside it and then clicking the ‘submit’ button.  An explanation of the different settings follows:-

  • Enable the Practice Mode.   The ‘practice mode’ if ticked means that all students will be offered a Practice Test each time they log into Skill Evaluator, as long as they have been assigned to sit a test.  The Practice Test score is not recorded in the Administration System.  If this option is greyed out so that you cannot select it, it means that the Practice Mode is not available in your account.  If you wish to query why this is so please call Type&Test on 017683 42821 or email enquiries@typeandtest.com

(Note:- If you have not selected a Practice Test using the ‘Customise Tests’ feature, then your students will not  be offered a Practice Test even if you have ticked the ‘Enable Practice Mode’ option.  Please see section 5 below).

  • Allow user to print the test content.  If you select this option, students will have the  option to print the test text.  This might be useful if you want to let students practice their typing by copying from a piece of paper as opposed to the screen.  However, if you don’t want to introduce the possibility that the test text may be passed around between students, don’t select this option.
  • Use Double Spaces after the end of a sentence/punctuation mark.  Select this option if you want the tests to expect the use of a double space following the end of a sentence.  You will probably want this to mirror the setting that applies to your courseware for consistency.
  • Use the enter key for a new line.  This setting, if selected, will mean that students will have to press the enter key to move to a new line – i.e, the text will not wrap or scroll down automatically.
  • Add extra entries to student report.  By selecting this option, the student report will include the following extra entries:- The name of the Student Group: The name of the Group Administrator: The student’s name and score separated: The test type (e.g., main test).
  • Email test result to user.  If you select this option, a report showing the result and a reproduction of the passage the student has typed in their test, with any errors highlighted, will be sent automatically to the student’s email address.  (Note :- This is the address that you entered in the email address field when enrolling the student on the course.  You can edit this address at any time by clicking on the student’s user name in the student list, and then editing the email address field before clicking the ‘modify’ button).
  • Add certificate to result email.  By selecting this option, the student will receive a copy of their certificate with their result email.
  • Email test result to administrator.  If you select this option, a report showing the result and a reproduction of the passage the student has typed in their test, with any errors identified, will be sent automatically to the administrator’s email address.  This is particularly useful if you have permitted the student to attempt a test in their own time.
  • Allow student to print the Skill Evaluator certificate.  Select this option if you want the student to have the option to print their certificate at the point when they view their result on screen immediately after their test.
  • Allow Skill Evaluator Certificate only if accuracy is more than 97.99%.  With this selection, you can      allocate an accuracy pass mark so that a certificate is not available if the student does not achieve 98% accuracy or higher.
  • Enable Skill Evaluator. This is an important selection.  This must be ticked if any student in your Administrator Account is to take a test.  If it is not ticked, none of the students in your account will be able to sit a test, even if they are individually enabled to do so.
  • Automatically enable student after the Main Test.  Tick this box if you intend to assign more than one test to a student.  If you don’t tick this box, then students will have to be individually re-enabled to take a test after each attempt.
  • Each student has their own main test.  By selecting this option, you are able to assign each student with a different test from the selection of tests available rather than them all having access to the same one.
  • Display a single score rather than WPM/Accuracy.  If you select this option, then the score will be expressed only in speed and not by speed and accuracy.  The speed score will be weighted (reduced) to take account of any errors made by the student.
  • Choose Test Duration. Enter the test duration you want to apply to all Main Tests, Warm-up Tests and Practice Tests in your account.  You can set any whole-minute duration from 2 minutes to 10 minutes by typing in the figure in the box.  If you are using Skill Evaluator for recruitment purposes, it is not uncommon to select a test duration of 5 minutes or more.
